Lockdown Gaming: Another Triple Threat

Hope you’re all keeping well!

Since my last post I have added two new bloggers to the site in Shikhar and Erin. This has allowed us to expand and hopefully provide more posts and different perspectives and types of posts. Be sure to check out their introduction posts and Erin’s first ever blog about ‘Scrap Mechanic’.

Speaking of my last post, it is the biggest numbers we have seen since the very recent start of this site with over 300 reads. I do like to advertise and shamelessly plug my posts, so I appreciate if you have come from one of the many crevices of the internet – why don’t you subscribe and get notified in the future when we post. I also received some great constructive criticism regarding that blog – in that the three games were quite well known - and I wanted to add another three titles I believe you could use to fill your boots during this lockdown phase – which for some of us is nearing the end (hopefully!)

The Forest

The Forest is a game that is most commonly known to be a PC game but is now a PS4 title. This survival game allows for players to play with a certain amount of freedom, in that you don’t need to complete the story to actually progress through the game, it’s very non-linear that way. After crashing on an unknown island, the player is focused on finding their lost child. Along the way the player will have to build a base, make it secure and fend of waves of the natives (mutants) who adapt and evolve over time – the AI behaviour is wildly interesting. However, you don’t need to do this! You can decide you’re going to explore every cave, grow the biggest safehouse – link it to other safehouses via ziplines and liberate the island (metaphorically). What’s even better is that you can do this with up to 3 other people on console! Not a fan of fighting off mutants and you just wanna relax, build and explore? You can even play in a passive game mode. With the sequel being teased just last year, let this game get its addicting hooks into you first! It can be picked up for a discounted price on the UK store of £7.99.

Alienation

This PS4 exclusive has went a little under the radar to my knowledge. Created by Housemarque, this twin stick shooter allows for smooth and rewarding combat in a single player or multiplayer format which is ideal for our current situation around the globe. Mixed with role playing features and different player types, this is a game that I would recommend giving at least a second playthrough of if you manage to complete it. Having a short campaign which you could probably breeze through in a couple nights allows for Alienation to be replayed almost immediately as a different player – I quite liked playing as a Tank character! It’s combat loop is rather addictive once you get in the flow of slaying alien lifeforms with a varying number of weapons and different special abilities for each character. Moulding your ideal set up is very satisfying, particularly when teaming up with mates! It has been rated fairly highly throughout many outlets with a Metacritic score of 79. And as this can be picked up for a measly £3.99 at the moment, pairing it with the season pass DLC at £2.40 - £6.39 is a fantastic value for money option. You may have even picked this up as part of PS Plus – better check your library!

What Remains of Edith Finch

I’ve saved my personal favourite as last here. I was blown away by the creative genius of What Remains of Edith Finch had to offer. This ‘walking sim’ had my mind in overdrive thinking, “what next?”, “is this a horror?” and “they haven’t just done that, have they?”. The makers of The Unfinished Swan (Giant Sparrow) know how to tell a story as we see the through the character’s (Edith Finch) eyes as the stories that unfurl from exploring the old Finch residence – a structure straight out of a children’s book. I’d rather not say more on the story, it really is one that should be experienced in a blind playthrough. It did after-all win the Game Award for Best Narrative in 2017. It’s very short length allows for this game to be completed in one session, and I highly recommend you do this for maximum engagement and enjoyment – I actually think you won’t realise how quickly time will pass when playing this. This game can be found on all current platforms and is currently priced on the PS store at £15.99 but it has however already been a PS Plus game so do check your library incase you have saved it! I paid full price for this game and I have no regrets. SO please do pick it up if you like my opinions (in no way connected to Giant Sparrow).

Another Lockdown Gaming triple down, another message to our readers to stay safe. It appears lockdown here in the UK is easing but do continue to adhere to rules issued by your government. You know the drill by now guys.
